CORC SUCCESS AT THE NATIONALS

CORC JUNIOR RACE REPORT

The 2018 National Cross Country Mountain Bike Championships were held on a relatively flat but technically challenging course in Armidale on 23-25th February. The Championships started with a team relay contested by 16 teams. The CORC juniors Corey Smith, Charlie Brodie and Zoe Cuthbert along with CORC Masters rider Simon Smith, competing as the Trek Shimano Australia team, taking out 3rd after an exciting battle that pitted Charlie against Cameron Wright, the Junior World Champion, on the last lap.

The Cross Country Eliminator was contested the same day with excellent results for a number of the CORC juniors. Arwen Crampton showed extraordinary form to take out the Open women’s race; Charlie Brodie came 2nd in the very competitive UCI men’s category (elite, U23 and U19); Zoe Cuthbert took 2nd in the equivalent women’s category; Jordan Riddle raced the biggest field in the open men’s race and made it through to the small final.

On Saturday Ryan Smith and Declan Inglis were in excellent form in the U17, finishing within seconds of each other after a hard fought battle that saw Ryan pipping Declan at the finish line for the bronze medal position. Jordan Riddle and Josh Bilski both finished well within the top 20 in a very competitive field of over 40 riders. Arwen Crampton and Chloe Dore rode with technical finesse in the extremely competitive U17 girl’s category which had a record breaking 16 participants.

Sunday saw an extremely close race with CORC juniors Charlie Brodie and Corey Smith locked with Tasmanian Sam Fox for the minor podium positions in the U19 men’s race behind the current World Champion Cameron Wright and 6th ranked junior Matthew Dinham. Eventually Smith took 4th and Brodie 5th with 5 seconds separating 3rd-5th! A similarly close race in the junior women’s race saw Zoe Cuthbert take the Championship with 6 sec lead.
