Canberra success at Nationals

A big contingent from Canberra took out several medals and placings during AusCycling’s National Championships in mountainbiking the past week. Bec and Dan McConnell became National Elite XCO and XCC Champions while Sian A’Hern claimed the National title in downhill. CORC also had a good representation of junior riders who impressed in the dusty tracks in Maydena Bike Park.

Elite, U23 and U19 raced on Saturday in rainy and muddy condition. In Women Elite Bec McConnell won the race with Zoe Cuthbert in silver position. Dan McConnell took out the top step in Elite Men and rounded out a successfull XCO race for the McConnells. Bec also won the E-bike XCO race earlier in the week with Bev Anderson in third place. Jackson Frew rode to a strong sixth place in Elite Men Downhill with Kye A’Hern in 7th place.

Some of the riders from CORC Junior Development had also taken the long trip to Tasmania to test their skills and fitness against the best in the country. Jim Mungoven came home with two fantastic bronze medals in XCC and XCO in U13 Men. Oliver Grande was unclucky in both the XCC and XCO with mechanicals in both races, but he fixed his bike and rode in to fifth place in both races in U13 Men. Eddie Mungoven raced strong in the big U15 Men field and came fifth in XCC and fourth in XCO. In U15 Women Chloe Pragt raced to a sixth place in XCC, but she unfortunately retired after a crash in XCO. Eden Dickson came 18th in both XCC and XCO in the tough U17 category. Junior rider Ryan Smith raced to 9th place in XCC and an 11th place in XCO. Zoe Cuthbert took home silver in XCC and Pump track as well.

Several master riders from CORC also impressed in Maydena and claimed podium spots. Congratulations to all the riders from CORC who raced and showed fantastic team spirit even when the race course was modified for some categories and the weather turned out to be challenging on Saturday.
