XCO National Series

2018 MTBA Cross-Country National Series presented by Beastwear – Rounds 7 & 8 was held in Stromlo Forest Park 24th & 25th of March. The double header in Stromlo was a success and a great way to show Stromlo to national and international riders – they loved the trails and our CORC riders were in great form often leading the way.

Saturday

A tough loop designed by local Canberran Andy Blair saw riders in all categories fight a tough battle against competitors, the steep hills, rocks and sand in typical warm and dusty Stromlo conditions. It seemed like local knowledge of the technical Cardiac Arrest climb and the challenging Hammerhead descent was an advantage for the CORC riders in many categories. Rebecca McConnell showed promising form and won Elite Women on her home track. In Elite men Andy Blair came 4th in a race won by Australian Champion Cameron Ivory.
Zoe Cuthbert dominated the Junior Women field and took home the gold medal. Charlie Brodie came 6th in Junior Men. The Under 17 Men category saw 3 CORC junior racers on the top steps of the podium with Ryan Smith in first, Jordan Riddle second and Josh Bilski in third place. In the under 17 women Arwen Crampton rode to a bronze medal. Canberra rider Ally Durr won Expert Women ahead of Alice Patterson-Robert.In under 15 Men CORC junior Cameron Rogers raced to 5th place ahead of Jesse Dunlop.

Local Master Category Winners were:
Master 1 Women Elise Burriss
Master 4 Women Michelle Inglis
Master 5 Women Tara Sutherland
Master 5 Men Michael Inglis
Master 6 Men John Henderson
Master 7 Men Nathan Carroll

Sunday

The weather was challenging for the racers on Sunday with strong wind. The loop took the riders up to the top of Mt Stromlo via the famous Heartbreaker climb and then rewarded them with the downhill descent G-20 and Luge all the way down to Old Duffy where the feed and tech zone was located for riders to fuel up before the next climb up to Mt Stromlo. CORC saw a big field of local junior riders battling it out with the other state riders. The CORC junior riders really stepped up and impressed with some solid riding on Sunday as well. Ryan Smith rode in to a gold medal in the under 17 men’s field, while Zoe Cuthbert won junior women. Corey Smith came back from a crash on Saturday and rode to a strong 3rd place in Junior Men.

CORC would like to thank all the volunteers for donating their time to help out making this event a great success. A big thank you as well to everyone who donated items for the Tathra mountain bike community.

CORC would like to give a special thank you to the nearly 100 volunteers that gave their time to help us run round 7 and 8 of the 2018 MTBA Cross-Country National Series presented by Beastwear.

Special mention to Event Manager Gill Battye who worked many hours to ensure the event was a success and also to Mel and Nic who organised everyone beforehand and on the ground during the event, and an extra special mention to Matt and CC from MTBA who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and gave us a few laughs along the way. Along with CORC members we had volunteers from Canberra and interstate, including Mikako from Japan who was here as a coach but gave her time to help us out.

Our volunteers helped us in a variety of roles including site setup and pack-down, marking and bunting the course, timing, course marshals, feed/tech marshals, car parking management and anything else that was thrown at them from us at HQ!

CORC would like to give a huge THANK YOU to our suppliers, without you we couldn’t have run our event.
